2006-2007 Board of Directors Appointed
Carolyn Tayler – President
Carolyn has been President-elect of BCHPCA for the past year. Carolyn has worked in a variety of settings with cancer & palliative patients over the past 30 years. She is currently Regional Director for End of life and Hospice Palliative Care, Fraser Health.

Carolyn has served as President of the BC Oncology Nurses Group and the Canadian Association of Nurses in Oncology. She has worked on a number of provincial and national initiatives aimed at improving care at the end-of-life.

Wendy Pratt – President-elect

Wendy’s involvement with hospice palliative care began with volunteer training in 1995, followed by tenure as Executive Director with Abbotsford Hospice. She now works as Executive Director of Nanaimo Hospice and has served as a director of BCHPCA (Vancouver Island) for 2 years.

Wendy believes that BCHPCA has “a very clear role to play in providing support to and advocating on behalf of its membership to ensure that the frontline programs and caregivers are empowered to deliver care. Quality end of life care is possible – it’s the right thing to do – we can make a difference – and I am committed to doing so.”

Sandra Castle – Fraser

While Sandra is relatively new to hospice palliative care, she has extensive experience in the not-for-profit world. Prior to becoming the Executive Director for Langley Hospice, she was Executive Director of the Delta Branch, Canadian Mental Health Assoc. and Community Development Manager, BC Arthritis Society. Sandra brings skills in leadership, management, communication and community development to the table. She looks forward to furthering the Association’s strategic plan & is “excited to be part of improving end-of-life care from a global perspective.”

Sandra is “a confident and inspiring leader with great ideas” & someone who has had “substantial impact on the relationship between Langley Hospice and the region’s professional caregivers.”

Diane Giles – Vancouver Coastal

Diane is the Coordinator of the Sunshine Coast Hospice Society, where she finds her past counselling experience important in supporting her volunteers and clients.

Diane’s experience with a life threatening accident provides her with a rare prospective on some of the unique needs and challenges of palliative care, creating a desire to become an advocate and voice for the dying and their loved ones.

Darcee Bidgood – Vancouver Island

Darcee has 13 years experience in hospice palliative care nursing, research, program development and advocacy. She began as a home care and hospice nurse in Victoria, and now works as a Clinical Nurse Specialist for the Vancouver Island Health Authority. She has been instrumental in the creation of a hospice unit in a small community hospital.

Darcee is seen to be a long-time advocate for end of life care and a team player. She is committed to “being accessible to members, to represent their issues to the board.” She believes she has “the education, experience, passion and commitment to play a key role in BCHPCA.”

Donalda Carson – North

Donalda is employed as Executive Director of Prince George Hospice. She has been a strong advocate for hospice palliative care in the North for many years and has been involved in the development of the regional palliative care committee and community team.

In the past, Donalda has taken a strong leadership role on the BCHPCA board, working on Hike for Hospice, advocacy initiatives and representing the issues of our northern members. She looks forward to continuing to work with colleagues in the north to form a strong network of hospice providers.

Margaret Milner – Interior

Meg has developed a passion for excellence in hospice palliative care, through her nursing and life experiences. She currently works as the Community Administrator for Mountain Lake Seniors Community in Nelson. In this and past roles in Interior Health, she has “worked collaboratively with other providers (professionals and hospice societies) toward a shared vision of quality end-of-life care for British Columbians.”

Meg’s vision includes “broad-scope education and ongoing advocacy.” She looks forward to increasing communication in her region in order to effectively liaise between members and the board of the association

Barbara Fitzsimmons – Provincial Health

Barb is the Senior Director of Operations for Specialty Medicine at BC Children’s Hospital, which includes the development of palliative care in the areas of oncology. Her background includes many years of paediatric nursing, along with work on boards and committees at the provincial and national level.

Barb is “an articulate communicator and a critical thinker who is able to build support among diverse groups.” She believes she has the experience, skills and dedication for this position, and looks forward to bringing “new ideas & fresh insights to the board.”
