2010 Awards Information and Application Information

The British Columbia Hospice and Palliative Care Association (BCHPCA) is very pleased to call for nominations from members for the following Annual Association Awards:

Research Award in Honour of Michael Downing

Volunteer Award in Recognition of Shara-Lee

Award of Excellence

Awards Recognizing Enhanced End-of-Life Care for British Columbians

(presented in collaboration with the Sovereign Order of St. John of Jerusalem)

The awards will be presented at the Association’s Annual Conference May 14-15, 2010 in celebration of the exceptional contributions of the individuals and community organizations working to provide the people of the Yukon and British Columbia with quality end-of-life care.

Please celebrate with us by nominating worthy candidates for these awards and join us at the conference to recognize these special people and organizations.  The criteria and nomination form for each award may be found on the Association website.  All nominations must be received by BCHPCA no later than Friday, March 12, 2010.

The Awards Committee of BCHPCA Board of Directors will make the final selection.  Award recipients will be notified by the Awards Committee and invited to attend the Award presentation at the 2010 Annual Conference in Surrey, B.C. on Friday, May 14, 2010.

2010 Bursaries Information and Application Information

The Membership and Awards Task Groups are pleased to announce the availability of Bursaries to attend the upcoming BCHPCA conference, Raising the Torch: Expanding the Vision, May 14-15, 2010.  The aim of the bursaries is to make continuing education more accessible to those individuals actively working within hospice palliative and end of life care programs who otherwise could not attend because due to cost.  Registration costs ($300 for Volunteers - $375 for Professionals) will be available for up to two individuals.  All other costs related to the conference, including transportation and accommodations will be the individual’s responsibility.

Once a decision is made, the Registration on behalf of successful applicants will be paid by BCHPCA directly to the Conference Registrar.  Bursaries are non-refundable, non-transferable and have no cash value to the recipients. 


Deadline for Applications:
Applications must be received in the BCHPCA office by email, post/courier, or fax no later than 12:00 Noon on Friday, March 12, 2010.

The successful applicants will be notified by Friday, April 2, 2010.   


Eligibility Criteria:

  • Volunteers, employees, and board members of Hospice Societies
  • Professionals & others actively working within hospice palliative and end of life care
  • Professionals actively involved in education related to hospice palliative care.

The following are not eligible to apply:

  • Anyone receiving financial assistance from BCHPCA within the past two year
  • Active BCHPCA Board Members and/or active Chairs of Board Task Groups.

Bursary Application Guidelines: 

  1. Applicants will complete the application form (see next page) and submit it by 12:00 Noon on Friday, March 12, 2010 to BCHPCA Office.
  2. In the case of individuals working within a hospice palliative and end of life program, the application must be supported by a supervisor within the program (eg. hospice society, palliative care unit, health authority, bereavement programs, etc).
  3. Successful applicants must attend the entire conference and all registered sessions.
  4. Successful applicants will be notified by Friday, April 2, 2010.
  5. All BCHPCA policies, by-laws and procedures shall direct decision-making.
