BCHPCA Components of Care

Mission Hospice Society
The Mission Hospice Society was founded in 1985 to provide compassionate care and support to the dying and the bereaved. Hospice emphasizes “care not cure” for the terminally ill and the provision of social, emotional and spiritual comfort for the patient, family and friends throughout the final stage of illness, at the time of death and during bereavement. The programs and services of the Mission Hospice Society are free.

The Palliative Care Team
Living with a terminal illness can be an intense and stressful time for a person and his or her family and other loved ones.
Volunteer Visitors from the Hospice Society are trained to provide emotional, practical and spiritual support before, during and after death.

Visitors do not provide professional counseling. They give the gift of unhurried time. They know how to listen non-judgmentally and empathetically, and allow the speaker to find his or her answers. They know about illness, death and grief and can let patients and families know that what they are experiencing is normal. They can provide respite, practical support and access to needed information and resources.

Any member of the community can be a Volunteer Visitor.  Visitors must complete an intensive 30-hour training course and pass an RCMP Criminal Record Check and an in-depth interview.  Visitors receive ongoing support and education monthly support meetings.  Would you like to know more? Call us at 604-826-2235.

ONE-ON-ONE PEER SUPPORT from trained volunteers or a staff person is always available.  These people listen and help you find your own answers. This is not professional counseling.

Our LIBRARY contains a wealth of resources that provide information, encouragement and support  for people living with grief and loss.

There is no charge for these services. Call  the Hospice office for more information.
