BCHPCA Components of Care
Administration
Board of St. James oversees a multifaceted organization including May's and Cottage Hospices. May's Place has 6 beds. Cottage Hospice has 10 beds. Full administration is provided by St. James’ Community Service Society. The hospices are funded by the Vancouver/Coastal Health Authority; per diem is charged to residents. Those on welfare are supported for the per diem by Ministry of Employment and Income Assistance.
Volunteer Program
Volunteers number about 45 but are not all active at one time. In-house support care is usually 10:00 am - 8:00 pm and on-call. Help with general house duties, kitchen help, laundry, visiting patients, taking patients out,
Home Program
There is no home program officially.
Freestanding Hospice
Six beds - May’s Place. 10 beds opened Spring 1998. Cottage Hospice, 650 N. Penticton Street. Terminal care symptom management, social support, emotional, spiritual-homelike atmosphere but sophisticated care. Priority given to downtown eastside residents with weeks - months to live. Any disease. Multi-level care license. Nursing RN’s 24 hours. LPN's- Care Aides - physician on-call - Activity Worker. All other professionals through North Health Unit.
Spiritual and Pastoral Care
Part time, non-denominational Spiritual Care Consultant available.
Symptom Management
Physician, nurses, activity worker. All other health care professionals accessed through North Health Unit as needed.
Bereavement Program
Phone follow-up once a year, memorial services twice a year. Those in need of more support are referred to community (within their areas) bereavement groups.
Education and Professional Training
Students accepted for practicum placements in various disciplines. Nurses encouraged to take courses.
Evaluation and Research
Program Evaluation - 3 months after death, families are sent a questionnaire. We have an 80% response rate.
Organization Mission Statement
St. James Community Service Society was established to offer aid and assistance to those who are in need and especially to those who are bypassed by the normal channels of charitable assistance. It is our intent to offer our service with compassion for each individual and with a concern for social justice assuring that no person shall be discriminated against for whatever reason. We intend to do everything possible to heighten trust and respect, acknowledging the worth of each human person.
To offer terminally ill people a residence that promotes dignity. When the goals of cure and prolongation of life are no longer paramount, care is directed towards the control of distressing symptoms and addresses the physical, psychological, interpersonal, and spiritual needs of dying persons and their families. Care encompasses the terminal phase, death and bereavement period.
