BCHPCA Components of Care
Administration
The North Shore Palliative Care Program is regionally coordinated by a Clinical Nurse Specialist together with a Medical Director and administrators from Lions Gate Hospital and North Shore Health Region. An Advisory Program Committee provides consultation and support through an interdisciplinary group of providers and stakeholders from acute, private, volunteer, consumer and residential sectors and affiliated programs in the hospital and community.
The program encompasses enhanced care in the community, a consultation team and a palliative care unit. Interdisciplinary meetings including home care and hospital staff ensure continuity of care.

Palliative Care Volunteers are provided through North Shore Family Services. They are trained and supported by the Volunteer Coordinator. Volunteers provide a variety of services to all palliative care patients and their families in the hospital, community or care facility. Services include compassionate touch massage, recording of life stories,
patient and family support. One hundred volunteers provide 13,850 hours each year.
Home Program
The family physician and Home Care Nurse in partnership with patient and family form the core team in the community. A palliative care Home Care Nurse takes referrals and provides care and consultation in complex cases.
The NSPCP Consultation Team provides specialized consultation and support as needed. The program can put in extra home support and nursing care into the home as needed to allow people to be cared for and to die at home.
Hospital Program
The 16 bed palliative care unit is located on 7 West at Lions Gate Hospital. Patients are admitted by their family physicians for acute symptom management or terminal care if death at home if not possible. The Consultation Team
and supportive services extend to palliative care patients on other units in the hospital. Care includes symptom control, support, counseling, and education.
Freestanding Hospice
Residential care needs are partially addressed by a resource of two hospice beds located in Cedarview Lodge and the
enhanced home support.
