BCHPCA Components of Care

Administration
The Hospice office is located in the City Centre Mall, Suite 233A, which we share with the Canadian Cancer Society.  A 10-member volunteer Board sets policy and carries out fund-raising, publicity, etc.  We employ a part-time Coordinator of Volunteer Services, who looks after the training and scheduling of volunteer visitors.  Funding is received from donations, NHA grant, community telethon funds, and occasionally a grant from the Provincial Government gaming commission.

Volunteer Program
There are currently 22 trained volunteer visitors.  The training program consists of 8 sessions and is usually held once a year, depending on demand.  Several volunteers are trained to provide "Healing Touch" therapeutic services, upon request.

Home Program
Volunteers are scheduled to visit in homes,  providing companionship and practical support to clients and their families, as well as respite and bereavement support.    Planning, writing letters & memoirs, playing games, transporting to appointments, etc. are some of the activities we offer and assist with.  We work very closely with Home Support and Homecare Nurses.

Hospital Program
We have two palliative care rooms in the hospital, decorated and equipped with all the extras that a family needs to be able to have 24-hour presence with their loved ones.  Hospice volunteers provide respite time for family and caregivers, and will provide last days round-the-clock vigil when requested.  We also provide comfort in the Multi-level care facility which is situated next to the hospital.  We have a member of the medical staff on our Hospice board.

Spiritual and Pastoral Care
We provide individual spiritual support as requested and refer to the Kitimat Ministerial Association for pastoral care.  We also have a clergy member on our Hospice board.

Bereavement Program
Client families are kept under our care for up to a year, or as needed.
Rainbows program: a support program for children who have lost a parent through death, divorce, separation or abandonment.
Close relationships with Cancer Society and Alzheimer's Society.

Education and Professional Training
Regular volunteer training, workshops, regional meetings and conference attendance; sponsor area presentations with other community groups.

Upcoming Events
Tom Begert-Clark, BA, MDiv, LPC, will present a seminar/workshop at the Legion Hall in Kitimat on Nov 18th from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.  Tom is an author, consultant, trainer and humourist who has been working with the senior population for over 25 years.  Session #1 - "Did You See What I Said?" This communications and personality session will use humour and laughter to demonstrate that often, within our normal daily meetings and conversations, we hear and process what we perceive is being said, rather than what is actually being said.  Find out how to better communicate with all those varied personality types who share your personal and professional lives.  Session #2 - "I Hate Reality Shows...Especially When It's Mine!" This session looks at issues surrounding being a caregiver.  Tom will share the endearing and entertaining look at his family's real-life experiences.  This session is based on his book, "Rosie John Doesn't Live Here Anymore: One Family's Journey in Eldercare."
