BCHPCA Components of Care

Mission Statement
The Division of Palliative Care, Department of Family Practice, Faculty of Medicine in the University of British Columbia, aims to ensure excellence in care of the dying through research, advocacy and education in undergraduate, graduate, postgraduate and public education.

EDUCATION
Palliative care education includes the premise that palliative care is not only education in the science and techniques of physiological pain and symptom control (including psychological, spiritual and existential suffering) but also in the ability to nurture, sustain and build team relationships and in the use of “self” as a primary source to compassionate care and as a therapeutic instrument.

Postgraduate Education - Enhanced Skills
The Department of Family Practice at the University of British Columbia is very pleased to make available a number of residency positions for family physicians or specialists in the province of British Columbia for the purpose of developing specific advanced skills for which there is an identified community need. These positions represent a commitment on the part of the Department of Family Practice, and the Medical School, to respond to community need in an effective way. They are not a back door to a Royal College Residency.

The Enhanced Skills Program began in 1995 as an effort to meet the medical skill needs of underserviced communities of British Columbia. Many rural physicians, after several years of practice, have identified needs in their communities that would be well met by family physicians with appropriate focused training. Funding for training has not been available, until recently, unless the individual funded the training themselves. This program has been established to try to address that need and to provide physicians and communities with the skills they require to manage their health care programs.

This is a flexible program, aimed to accommodate a practicing family physician's or specialist's requirements for advanced training. Depending on the residency, and the goals and objectives of the resident, training may take place completely in major teaching hospitals, or there may be opportunities for training in community hospitals or other appropriate community sites throughout the province. Teaching is interdisciplinary and focused on the specific needs of the candidate.

Postgraduate Education - Year of Added Competency in Palliative Care

The University of B.C. Division of Palliative Care offers a one year program in Palliative Medicine, jointly accredited by the College of Family Physicians and the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada. The program is for physicians seeking added competency in palliative medicine, and would be suitable for a) family practice residents who have completed their two year residency, b) specialty residents who have completed three years of their residency, who wish to incorporate a year of palliative medicine as part of their residency experience, and c) practicing physicians ( whether family physicians or specialists ) who intend to focus their career on palliative medicine. On completion of the program, the physician will be able to provide primary and consultant palliative care services, including the education of medical students and physicians. There will also be a solid foundation should he/she wish to pursue an academic/ research career in palliative medicine.

The resident gains extensive knowledge, skills, and clinical experience in pain and symptom management, psycho-social and spiritual dimensions of caring for patients and families facing terminal illness. The program is based primarily in Vancouver or Victoria, but there will be opportunity to gain palliative care experience in other B.C. centers. The resident will have experience in palliative care units, acute care hospital palliative consultation services, the B.C. Cancer Agency, and community hospice programs.

There is also an academic research project during the one-year program, and there is a variety of elective options available, depending on the specific interests of the resident.

Applications for the Year of Added Competency in Palliative Care, UBC for the 2007/08 year are now being accepted.  Please go to our website for further information.
