Dr James Orbinski - BCHPCA is very proud to announce our first Keynote Speaker for the 2009 Conference – Dr James Orbinski.
Dr James Orbinski is a Research Scientist and Associate Professor of Family and Community Medicine and Political Science at St. Michael’s Hospital and the University of Toronto. He was the International President of Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) (Doctors without Borders) at the time the organization received the 1999 Nobel Peace Prize.
James worked with MSF in a number of settings – including Goma, Zaire (now Congo) in the fall of 1996 during the refugee crisis; in Kigali during the Rwandan genocide of 1994; and in Baidoa, Somalia during the civil war and famine of 1992-93. His book "An Imperfect Offering: Humanitarian Action for the 21st Century" talks about his experiences as a physician working for MSF in Rwanda during the genocide. He is the subject of the award-winning 2005 CBC documentary "Evil Revisited", which documented Orbinski's visit to Rwanda on the tenth anniversary of the genocide, his first such visit since the violence. He is also the subject of the 2007 documentary "Triage: Dr. James Orbinski's Humanitarian Dilemma", which follows Orbinski's return to Somalia, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
James Orbinski is the co-founder and Chair of the Board of Directors of Dignitas International, a medical humanitarian organization working with communities to dramatically increase access to life-saving treatment and prevention in areas overwhelmed by HIV/AIDS. He is also a founder of the Drugs for Neglected Diseases Initiative, a not-for-profit pharmaceutical research and development entity focused on the diseases of the South.
Maggie Callanan - Maggie Callanan will be a keynote presentor and will be presenting a half day intensive workshop at the 2009 BCHPCA Conference.
Maggie Callanan, is a world-renowned speaker on topics relating to the care of the dying, as well as coping strategies for hospice staff and volunteers. Hospices, hospitals, nursing and medical schools, church groups, community groups, and national conference audiences have greeted her enthusiastically. Her book Final Gifts has become a classic in the field.
Starting as a hospice nurse in 1981, Maggie Callanan has studied, taught, and written about death and dying, including the unique and symbolic communication of the dying, which is often labelled as “confused language” and consequently often ignored by professional and family caregivers. Addressing medical, personal, emotional, and spiritual aspects of life's final journeys, Maggie delivers practical, no-nonsense answers to difficult questions tempered by humour, wisdom, and compassion.
Maggie Callanan is the co-author of the celebrated book Final Gifts: Understanding the Special Awareness Needs and Communication of the Dying (link), which is now published in nine languages. She was the first coordinator and contributing author of the “Dealing with Death” column in the American Journal of Nursing.
Maggie is also the coordinator of the National Hospice, Palliative and Home Care Speakers Bureau, and has served as a board member of the International Association of Near Death Studies (IANDS) and the facilitator of the IANDS National Capital Area Chapter support group for Near Death Experiences.
