BCHPCA Components of Care

Administration
Administration is through a CORE TEAM with a loose overview from our affiliate, Victoria Hospice.  Funding is from donations (from individuals and local service groups) and gaming (Bingo) funds.  We also have two fundraising events per year. “Plant a Memory”, and “Celebrate a Life”.

Volunteer Program
We have approximately forty trained volunteers, most of whom visit terminal patients and their families. Four of our volunteers do “Therapeutic Touch” for patients when it is requested.

Home Program
As a Community Hospice, we enjoy several partnerships that maximize the care available to the patient i.e., VIHA nursing, home care agencies, equipment from a “Loan Cupboard”.

Hospital Program
Exists only in as much as we will follow that patient with prayers, and volunteers and physicians will visit the hospitalized patients.

Spiritual and Pastoral Care
We are connected to all local religious groups.  Our own counsellor and several volunteers offer spiritual care.

Symptom Management
With three hospice trained physicians and with well trained community nurses all working as a team, with G.P.’s, volunteers and support agencies the patients receive excellent care.

Bereavement Program
Individual volunteers maintain contact and offer support to bereaved families. We also offer a socially-oriented “Widows Support Group”. We are planning to introduce regularly-scheduled group support “Grief Counselling”, beginning in October.

Education and Professional Training
We aim to have all nurses receive additional training in palliative care and have paid for this training.  All training of volunteers is encouraged and supported.

Evaluation and Research
We periodically evaluate the program.

Other relevant information
Our greatest achievement seems to be the twice monthly multi-disciplinary meetings at which cases are discussed, and decisions made, by physicians, nurses, home help, volunteers, counsellors and G.P.’s.  Service to patients is greatly enhanced and assumptions are eliminated.
