Administration
The Society is a registered charitable organization established in 1994 by a group of concerned citizens in both Ucluelet and Tofino, and is supported by memberships and donations.  There is a 6-8 member Board under the leadership of a chairman and the directors.  The Board meets monthly with the inclusion of any Hospice members who wish to attend.  The Community Home Care Nurse for the area is a member, providing professional nursing liaison.

Volunteer Program
The volunteer training program is offered every 12-18 months.

Home Program
Referrals are received from the medical group, the Home Care Nurse, First Nations Health Services, and family for volunteers to visit in the home.

Hospital Program
Volunteers visit their assigned clients in hospital.  Visits are logged on patients’ charts. 

Spiritual & Pastoral Care
Local pastors and parishioners are Hospice members and provide the necessary support in this area.  Services of Remembrance are held yearly.

Bereavement Program
Volunteers trained in grief support hold periodic groups for the bereaved during the year, as well as providing support to the families of any assigned clients as appropriate.

Education and Professional Training
Training for visiting volunteers is held periodically Other related and bereavement training is offered periodically both from outside sources and local experts.  A library has been established in the Ucluelet and Tofino Library with information pertinent to Hospice needs.

Evaluation & Research
Evaluation sessions are held after each death for the trained volunteers, chaired by the Acting Coordinator.  All information relating to the past situation is shared and discussed; similar sessions are held for the bereavement volunteer leaders with qualitative evaluation of family’s experience.

The Pacific Rim Hospice Society provides leadership and plays a coordinating role within the communities to ensure active and compassionate care for those facing life-threatening illness, death and bereavement, encompassing the patient and the family by offering physical, emotional and spiritual care.
