BCHPCA Components of Care
Administration
The group is a registered charitable organization, which was established in 1985. The foundation was set up through a bequest. The group operated with a four member management board which meets monthly.
Volunteer Program
Trained volunteers are available on the island to support the terminally ill, their families, and the bereaved, in the home or hospital setting.
Many Hospice volunteers have been trained, and at present there are forty active volunteers. The Coordinator matches the volunteers to referred clients. A monthly meeting is held with a support focus, and the program has volunteers designated as support resources, available for the volunteers to contact when they feel the need.
Home Program
Trained volunteers visit in the home to support the terminally ill and their families, and the bereaved. Informal communication exists with the Home Care Nursing and Home Support services on the island.
Hospital Program
Volunteers visit their assigned clients in hospital. There is also a Hospital Volunteer program where volunteers are available for palliative patients who do not have community volunteers.
Bereavement Program
The volunteers follow their assigned families for as long as needed to provide bereavement support. The program is in touch with the local clergy and calls upon them as needed.
Saltspring Island is a small community with a large retirement population.
