BCHPCA Components of Care

Administration
Under the direction of the volunteer Board of Directors, we have a part-time staff of four: an Executive Director, a Co-ordinator of Volunteers, a Client Support Co-ordinator, and an Administrative Assistant.

Hospice Yukon has served the Yukon community since 1987.  Our client base has steadily increased, and over time, we have grown from a staff of one to a staff of four.

Volunteer Program
Approximately 40 hospice-trained volunteers provide our clients with bereavement and palliative support.  In addition, several “office volunteers” assist in the running of the office.  Trained volunteers provide support to the terminally ill for up to one year prior to death.  The also provide grief support for up to thirteen months for the bereaved and their loved ones and facilitate group programs.

Hospice Program
We help individuals to acquire skills to live positive lives by developing health attitudes about living and dying, loss and grief.  We provide the following, free of charge:
• Client assessment and, when appropriate, staff-based one-on-one client support for up to four sessions;
• A central location so that our volunteers, the general public, and community professionals may easily access our resources;
• Free educational materials and support to resource workers and professionals throughout the Yukon who are involved with the dying, the bereaved, and their families;
• Public education through –
  • Visual exhibits
  • Workshops
  • Brochures
  • Speaking engagements
  • Special programs such as our yearly “Lights of Life”
• Group programs such as Adult Bereavement and Kids Grieve Too
• An excellent resource library of books, videos, audiocassettes and informational handouts that are frequently used by the public as well as resource workers from Whitehorse and outlying communities;
• An annual “Lights of Life Celebration”, attracting hundreds of Yukoners who turn on a Christmas light in memory of a loved one.  (We received widespread media coverage throughout this event, and hundreds of dollars in corporate donations).

Referrals
We have become an essential member of the health and social services community and are generally recognized as the “grief experts” in the Yukon, receiving many referrals from:
• Resource workers and professionals from Yukon First Nation and non-First Nations communities;
