BCHPCA Components of Care

Administration
Hospice office is located in the Lakes District Hospital and Health Centre.  Hospice is included in the hospital administration and is government funded; also receives donations.  There is a minimal amount of fundraising carried out.  The Board comes under the Prince George Regional Health Board.

Volunteer Program
There are currently 14 volunteers, 7 of which are active and available.  Our focus is on meeting the non medical or social needs of terminally ill patients.  Our program components include respite care and some bereavement support.

Home Program
Volunteers will supply respite services to client and family as varied as client/family needs; can work in coordination with our Homecare Nurse and local Home Support Workers.

Hospital Program
We have available to us, in the hospital, one hospice room equipped with a bed and furnished by local donations  with the client/family comfort in mind.  The office is staffed by our coordinator every Tuesday from 1:00-4:00 p.m.  We also have a quiet room across the hall from the hospice room.

Spiritual and Pastoral Care
We provide individual pastoral care as requested by family/client.

Symptom Management
Due to our small group, we rely on our trained professional hospital staff and in the home respite environment, our Home Care Nurse and Home Support Workers (giving comfort care).  Our local care facility, The Pines, also provides professional staff as well as Care Aids.

Bereavement Program
There will be a Grief Support group starting in September 2006, at CNC. This group is sponsored by the local Hospice

Education and Professional Training
We encourage our volunteers to attend all available workshops within practical reach of our location and have monthly educational/support meetings for all our volunteers.  We are promoting public awareness (through local newspaper),. monthly hospice updates and possible radio coverage.

Organization Mission Statement
The Mission of the Burns Lake & District Hospice is to enhance the quality of life of persons facing death and bereavement through skilled and compassionate physical, emotional and spiritual care.
