BCHPCA Components of Care

Administration
A community program for assisting individuals living with a life threatening illness and for their families.  There is no fee for our services. The Merritt and District Hospice Program is a non-profit organization that started in December, 1988.  We have a 5 member board and are funded by donations (private and memorial donations, service clubs, community groups, Nicola Valley General Hospital Auxiliary).  We do not receive funding from any other agency or by government grants.

Volunteer Program
Our volunteers must participate in an initial training program prior to “placement” with a client(s).  The focus of the training program is to develop communication and active listening skills, and to gain an understanding of the Hospice philosophy, which includes death and dying and bereavement.

Home Program
“Time-Out” and home death support

Hospital Program
Palliative Care Bed and room furnished
One-to-one sitting with patients

Bereavement Program
Volunteers provide support to those who are experiencing bereavement.  This includes support to those with newly acknowledged normal grief issues, sudden death bereavement, and also unresolved grieving of the past.

Education and Professional Training
Volunteers attend inservices/conferences and we offer ongoing public speaking at the University College of Cariboo. The Hospice Assessor and Coordinator are available for consultation, education, and information with regard to a specific client or for general information.  We have a small lending library of books, audio tapes and videos plus many handouts and pamphlets which are available to the public.  There is no charge for this service.
