BCHPCA Components of Care

Administration
The Central Okanagan Hospice Palliative Care Program is a partnership involving Kelowna General Hospital (KGH), Douglas Fir Hospice, Community Care, Central Okanagan Hospice Association (COHA) and the Cancer Centre for the Southern Interior (CCSI).

Interior Health Authority (IHA) administers program.

Volunteer Program
The Central Okanagan Hospice Association provides emotional support through screened and prepared volunteers.  Services include one on one support in the home, designated volunteers at Douglas Fir Hospice and Kelowna General Hospital as well as bedside vigil for those close to death.

Community Program
Partnership with Community Care Program
At Home: a variety of health care professionals work with patients and their families in the home setting.  They regularly check progress and coordinate and support.  Supports are drawn in as necessary.
Douglas Fir Hospice: provides 24 beds for pain and symptom management, respite and end of life care.

In addition to the regular hours of Community Care supports, patients registered with the Palliative Care Program can access the services of the Palliative Response Team 24/7.

Hospital Program
The designated area for palliative care is on Royal 4B, an Oncology/Palliative Unit.  Patients may require admission for acute care or if they care needs cannot be met at home.

Spiritual and Pastoral Care
Douglas Fir Hospice utilizes the local ministry as required. KGH has 24hr on-call chaplain team

Symptom Management
Extensive interdisciplinary team of medical, nursing, counseling, volunteers, and therapy services in the Hospice, community and hospital.

Access to Pain and Symptom Management/Palliative Care team at CCSI.

At home patients and those in residential care can access the Palliative Response Team 24/7. Patients in Residential facilities can also consult the clinical resourse nurse to assist with planning care.

Organization Mission Statement
To provide a coordinated Hospital/Community Program for terminally ill patients and support their families to improve the quality of the dying process.

The program services referred patients within School District #23.
