BCHPCA Components of Care

Administration
The Central Okanagan Hospice Association has been a registered non-profit association since 1982.  It operates under the direction of a volunteer Board of Directors.

Volunteer Program
The Co-ordinator of  Volunteers is a part-time position (20 hours per week) and is responsible for overseeing volunteer co-ordination in the Community, at Kelowna General Hospital and the Douglas Fir Unit at Cottonwoods Extended Care Facility.  The Co-ordinator is responsible for recruiting, screening and training of new volunteers as well as providing input to the Education Committee for ongoing and advance volunteer training.  The 100+ volunteers provide service in:
• 1:1 volunteers in the community
• Vigil volunteers who are present at bedside with actively dying patients at home or in hospital
• Palliative care volunteers provide support at KGH and Cottonwoods and other community care homes.

Home Program
Community volunteers are matched to clients/families in their demographic area and follow the client/families through the illness, death and approximately six months of bereavement support.  Volunteers are linked directly with Home Care Nurses to improve the care and quality of life of the terminally ill and their families.

Hospital Program
COHA provides trained Hospice Volunteers who provide service to KGH, mainly of 4B, as well as vigil if required.

Vigil Program
Volunteers provide vigil service upon request.  Volunteers remain at the bedside of the actively dying patient providing support to the family also.

Bereavement Program
1:1 volunteer support for family members.  COHA also has a part time Bereavement Counsellor who provides counselling and support to families and the individual.  Volunteers facilitate an 8 week bereavement program for adults, a "Good Grief" camp for children and a school bereavement program for teens.

Education and Professional Training
Community education and fundraising presentations are done throughout the year for service clubs, church groups, sororities, seniors' centers, schools, colleges and businesses within the community.  COHA helps to organize the annual End of Life Issues conference.

Evaluation and Research
Monthly stats are collected and recorded.  Volunteers receive verbal feedback on a regular basis.  Evaluations are done when the need arises depending on the availability of funds.

Margaret MacNeill Library
COHA has an extensive resource library.  Books, tapes, videos and other relevant material can be borrowed for a three week period.

Organization Mission Statement
Our Mission is to enhance the quality of life
• through skilled and compassionate support of persons facing death and bereavement
• creating community awareness of the Hospice philosophy

Our Philosophy -
The Central Okanagan Hospice Association exists in the belief that through skilled and appropriate support and a sensitive, caring community, persons may be free to attain the degree of preparation for death and resolution to bereavement that is satisfactory to them.

Other Relevant Information
Funding is received from the United Way, Memberships, Gaming, local fundraising initiatives, donations and in memoriam donations.  The Community Partnership Agreement funds four hours per week of the Volunteer Co-ordinator's salary.
