BCHPCA Components of Care

Administration
We have a Coordinator for volunteers/palliative clients and a Board of Directors. We receive an annual grant from the Interior Health Authority (previously – Closer to Home Fund). We also receive support and depend on private donations and fundraising.

Volunteer Program
Under the direction of the Society’s Coordinator, Castlegar Hospice provides 43 trained volunteers who in turn provide support, understanding, and friendship for people living with a life-threatening illness, and their family and friends, in any setting within the Castlegar Community. This compassionate care extends through the whole process of death, dying and bereavement. Our volunteers also assist with public relations, administration, and fundraising. On-going education is provided at volunteer in-service monthly meetings. The program coordinator is also available for one-on-one support.

Home Program
Castlegar Hospice offers support through death, dying and bereavement in homes throughout our community, and we extend our services to private local facilities. We try to provide twenty-four hour per day care if it is required.

Hospital Program
Castlegar and District Hospital closed in July 2002. Plans are in progress to provide two palliative care beds in our extended care facility, Talarico Place.

Spiritual and Pastoral Care
We respect the religious or spiritual preference of each client, and provide referrals to the appropriate affiliation when requested to do so.

Symptom Management
The Coordinator maintains close contact with family, volunteers, Home Care Nurses, and other medical personnel so any changes occurring can be communicated and dealt with expeditiously.

Bereavement Program
Our Peer Grief Support Group meets every third Monday of the month, at 7:00 pm. One-on-one support is available as necessary, referrals to community counsellors are provided.

Education and Professional Training
Hospice Palliative Care volunteer training is a five-week certificate program with a training manual and interactive lectures from community and regional professionals. This course is offered to the community through Continuing Education at Selkirk College. Training continues through monthly in-service meetings with guest speakers. Education and public awareness is also offered through local newspapers, radio, and community events.

Evaluation and Research
We do a quarterly data collection for the Interior Health Authority.  The coordinator, volunteers, and board of director’s are always trying to improve our quality of care through research and feedback from families and medical personnel.

Organization Mission Statement
The purpose of the society is to provide compassionate hospice/palliative care for those with a life-threatening illness and to provide physical, emotional and spiritual support necessary to maintain the dignity and worth of the individual. This care is extended to family and friends throughout the process of death, dying and bereavement.
