BCHPCA Components of Care

Administration
Twelve member Board - representing Home Care, Acute Hospital, Physicians, Local Chapter of Cancer Society.  The remaining eight are elected for a two year term.  New position - contract - Volunteer Co-ordinator/Counsellor paid by Community Health Council through the Board.

Volunteer Program
New paid position - Coordinator of Volunteers/Counsellors provide one-on-one counselling and volunteer direction for 18 patient volunteers.  Volunteers help with fundraising, newsletters and committee work.

Home Program
Provided by Home Nursing through their mandate.  Home Nursing is one of Palliative Care Team that meet weekly to discuss patients on program.

Hospital Program 
One Resource Nurse designated to develop policies and procedures as needed.  Time allocated is 1 day a month.  This person is a core team member.  No designated bed or unit.

Free Standing Hospice
Association is actively pursing a Hospice House with 5 beds.  Community Health Council will fund staffing

Spiritual and Pastoral Care
One volunteer Pastoral Palliative Care person who provides spiritual care or connects persons with their own religious denomination support person if requested.

Symptom Management
Core team: Palliative Care physician, Homecare and Hospital Resource Nurses, Co-ordinator of Volunteers, Counsellor, Pastoral Services.

Bereavement Program
In process of expanding bereavement program.

Evaluation and Research
Conducted evaluation of program over this past year.  In the process of structuring data collected.

Organization Mission Statement
The Quesnel and District Palliative Care Association strives to provide comprehensive and coordinated care to persons and their families living with a life threatening illness.
