BCHPCA Components of Care

Administration
Since November 1992 Fort Nelson Hospice/Palliative Support Group Society has served the community. Governed by a volunteer Board of Directors we employ a part time coordinator who works out of an office in the Fort Nelson Hospital. Funding is obtained through a grant from Home and Community Care/Northern Health Authority, donations and fundraising events.

Volunteer Program
Presently the program has ten trained volunteers who have received 16 hours of initial training.  Volunteers are encouraged to attend in-service and education events.

Home Program
The program networks with Home Care Nursing and Home Support Services to provide more efficient hospice care.  Volunteers visit in the home providing patient and family support as well as respite time.

Hospital Program
Volunteers visit in the hospital and the multi-level care area.  At present there is one Palliative Care bed available in the local hospital. Our future plans are to have a palliative unit with adjoining family room in place.

Spiritual & Pastoral Care
The program works with the hospital  pastoral team and the Ministerial Association to help with spiritual concerns.

Bereavement Program
The coodinator and volunteers provide one-on-one support. A Grief Recovery Program is now in place and is being offered twice a year. Fort Nelson Hospice also offers to the community a "Celebrate a Life Service" during the Christmas Season.

Other Relevant Information
Fort Nelson Hospice/Palliative Care Support Group Society is in the unique position of being the only Hospice group available between Watson Lake, Yukon and Fort St. John, B.C. (956 km.).  The majority of our workload consists of bereavement services due to the number of injuries or sudden deaths involved in motor vehicle accidents.  Our community is located on the Alaska Highway, a major vacation route.
