Call for Nominations for 2005 BCHPCA Board of Directors

" One future, one vision"

The B C Hospice Palliative Care Association Nominations Committee is seeking nominations of members of the Association to serve on the BCHPCA Board of Directors. Elections will take place between April and May 2005. Terms of office will be for two years and commence May 14, 2005.

Call for nominations are for the positions of:


General duties and responsibilities of all BCHPCA Board Members

The BCHPCA board governs through outward vision that reflects the needs of the membership. It works in a proactive, collective, strategic way that focuses on the future. The board is accountable to the members of the association and is responsible for developing and monitoring policy, setting strategic direction and assuring Executive Director performance. Knowledge in areas of policy, finance, healthcare or advocacy is critical.

Duties and responsibilities of the Secretary-Treasurer
(elected by all members of the Association)
The secretary-Treasurer is responsible for the custody of All records and documents of the Society, and ensures the monitoring of financial policies. The Secretary-Treasurer ensures that the register of members is maintained and that all correspondence, minutes of meetings and financial records are managed (article 8.4 BCHPCA Constitution and Bylaws).

Duties and responsibilities of the Regional Directors
(elected by members working or residing within the Region)
The Regional Directors liase between the Board and the Regions of the Association, identifying Regional trends and issues, linking with Regional networks and respresenting the Board at the local level. At the direction of the President, Regional Directors serve on Board committees and working groups

Deadline for nominations (including letters of support, nomination form, biographical information form and photograph) is Friday, February 25, 2005.

Eligibility to hold BCHPCA office
1. Active (paid) member of BCHPCA in good standing, or honorary life member (article 5.2.3 of the BCHPCA Constitution and Bylaws)
2. Regional directors must ordinarily reside or work in the area for which they are seeking election (article 5.2.2 of the BCHPCA Constitution and Bylaws)

How to nominate a candidate for BCHPCA Board of Directors (article 5.5 BCHPCA Constitution and Bylaws)

  1. Nomination forms are available from the BCHPCA office or by downloading from the links on this website page.
  2. Nominations must be in writing, and must be signed by two active members in good standing or honorary life members.
  3. Candidates must provide a 5x7 photograph plus a written statement (500 words maximum) that will be sent to the voters, that sets out their skills, qualifications, education and experience; their reasons for wanting to be a director; their awareness of the duties and responsibilities of directors.
  4. Candidates must confirm in writing any known/potential conflicts of interest and their willingness to support the direction and policies set by the board.
  5. All nominations must be received by the Chair of the Nominations Committee by mail at BCHPCA, Room 502 - Comox Building, 1081 Burrard St., Vancouver, V6Z 1Y6, by fax at 604-806-8822 or by email at [email protected] no later than Friday, February 25, 2005.
  6. Members may nominate more than one candidate, but not more than one candidate for each position.

Failure to meet this deadline for receipt of nominations will make the nomination invalid

Nominations package must include:
-Completed Nominations form. (Download form by pressing here.)
-Completed Biographical form with expression of interest attached. (Download form by pressing here.)
-Two supporting letters from active or honorary members (may be nominators or other members)
-Candidate photograph (3"x4" or 5"x7") sent by mail or electronically (.jpeg, .tiff or .EPS at 300 dpi)

The election process:
1. February 25, 2005 - nominations are received in the BCHPCA office.
2. March 25, 2005 - mail-in ballots and biographical information for officers of the association. (secretary/treasurer) are sent to all active and honorary members; mail-in ballots and biographical information for regional directors will be sent to active and honorary members within their respective region.
3. April 8, 2005 - ballots are received in the BCHPCA office.
4. April 15, 2005 - candidates are notified of results of the election; of acclamation if one nominee.
5. May 14, 2005 - announcement to members at AGM of successful candidates.

BCHPCA elections are an open process. Members can request the names of all candidates who have submitted nominations. The information collected on the nomination form and biographical information form is required for the election process and it is collected under the requirements of the BCHPCA Constitution and Bylaws and BCHPCA Board of Directors' policies. The BCHPCA Executive consists of the President, Vice President, Secretary/Treasurer and Member-at-Large, each elected at the Annual General Meeting, and the Past President.

The BCHPCA Board of Directors has a Regional Director for each of its BC regions. Regional Directors are elected annually by their regional Delegates prior to the Annual General Meeting.
