The Caring Community
A Fieldbook for Hospice Palliative Care Services

Developed and produced by the BCHPCA, with the generous support of the Sovereign Order of St. John of Jerusalem.

The Caring Community is a comprehensive resource manual for those involved in Hospice Palliative Care volunteer management and training. It is a collection of conversations, reflections, ideas and stories offered by Hospice volunteers and their managers from across Canada. This collection of materials is crafted around four core themes: management, education, support and quality.

The Fieldbook shows how vision and standards can shape program development. It describes how to translate vision into experience; how to develop a collection of services into a program of care; how to maintain and improve existing programs; how to access resources.

There are practical tips for the education and training of volunteers: curriculum outline, planning guides, worksheets and evaluations. There are discussions about teamwork, quality of care and partnerships, along with potential roadblocks and solutions. All of this is aimed toward the successful creation and maintenance of volunteers services in the community.

The manual is designed to make browsing easy. There are cross references and signposts throughout the book, with an organizer at the beginning of every chapter that briefly summarizes its contents. Materials will suit the needs of both new programs and those with extensive experience in hospice palliative care volunteer services.

You can purchase copies of The Caring Community Fieldbook for $55 each, plus $5 each for mailing costs, by downloading and printing the ORDER FORM through the link at the bottom of this page. Mail the completed form and a cheque for payment to BCHPCA at the address shown on the form.
